Russia First Country to Officially Recognize Taliban Rule in Afghanistan

Russia officially recognized Afghanistan's Taliban government in July 2025 — the first United Nations member to do so since the Taliban took over in August 2021. No other country has followed. This breaks the diplomatic isolation that began after the US closed its embassy, leaving only a low-level American envoy as Washington's sole link to Kabul.
