Midwest Derecho and Floods Leave 540,000 Without Power

A derecho — a long-lived, 100 mph windstorm — struck the Midwest on August 11, followed by flooding that dumped over 11 inches of rain on Indiana. By August 13, roughly 540,000 homes and businesses had lost power. Nipsco, an Indiana utility, saw over half its customers go dark. At least three deaths are linked to the storms. Restoration could take days.
