Violent Midwest Storms Knock Out Power to Half a Million

On August 11, a rare, destructive windstorm called a derecho hit the Midwest with 100 mph gusts. Days of heavy rain followed, dropping over 11 inches on Indiana. By August 13, about 540,000 homes and businesses had lost power. One Indiana power company lost service to more than half its customers. At least three people died. Full repairs could take days.
