Putin Visits Disputed Kuril Island; Japan Protests

Russian President Putin visited Iturup, one of the Kuril islands claimed by both Russia and Japan, according to Russian state media. Japan's foreign minister Toshimitsu Motegi called the islands "inherently Japanese" and lodged a strong protest. The territorial dispute has blocked a formal World War Two peace treaty for over eight decades.
