Putin Visits Disputed Kuril Island, Japan Strongly Protests

Russian President Putin visited Iturup, one of the Kuril islands claimed by both countries, Russian state media reported. Japan's foreign minister Toshimitsu Motegi said the islands are "inherently Japanese territory both historically and under international law" and that Japan strongly protests the visit. The dispute has prevented a World War Two peace treaty for over eight decades.
