Hungary Elects Ousted Judge as President as Fidesz MPs Walk Out

Hungary's parliament elected András Baka, 73, a former Supreme Court head, as president by 140 votes to 6. All 51 lawmakers from Viktor Orbán's Fidesz party walked out before the vote, protesting the constitutional removal of predecessor Tamás Sulyok. Fidesz had removed Baka from the Supreme Court in 2011 for resisting rule-of-law erosion. His interim presidency can last up to five years, pending a new constitution.
