University of Michigan to Replace First-Semester Letter Grades with Pass/No Credit

Starting fall 2027, the University of Michigan's College of Literature, Science and the Arts will replace letter grades with pass or no credit designations for first-semester students. Transcripts will show only pass or no credit, though internal grades stay on file. LSA Dean Rosario Ceballo cited alarming rates of student stress, depression, and anxiety. MIT, Wellesley, and Swarthmore already do similar.
