University of Michigan Drops Letter Grades for First-Semester Students Starting Fall 2027

The University of Michigan's College of Literature, Science and the Arts will replace letter grades with pass/no credit designations for all first-semester students beginning fall 2027. Official transcripts will show only pass or no credit; internal grades will be retained. LSA Dean Rosario Ceballo cited "alarming rates of stress, depression and anxiety among students." MIT, Wellesley, and Swarthmore offer similar initiatives.
