U.S. violent crime dropped sharply in 2025, but domestic violence deaths went up

Violent crime in the U.S. fell 9.3% in 2025 — the biggest yearly drop since the FBI started estimating crime trends. But domestic violence killings rose in Chicago, Kansas City, and Ohio. Domestic violence made up a growing share of violent crime, up from 25% in 2020 to 27.5% in 2024. A national hotline received one million calls, up from 637,000 in 2020.
