U.S. violent crime posted a record decline in 2025 — but domestic violence killings rose

U.S. violent crime fell 9.3% in 2025, the steepest annual drop since the FBI began tracking estimates. Yet domestic violence homicides rose in Chicago, Kansas City, and Ohio. Domestic violence's share of violent crime climbed from 25% in 2020 to 27.5% in 2024. The National Domestic Violence Hotline fielded one million calls in 2025, up from nearly 637,000 five years earlier.
