U.S. violent crime fell at a record rate in 2025, but domestic violence killings moved the opposite direction

U.S. violent crime fell 9.3% in 2025 — the largest annual decline since the FBI began estimating crime trends. Yet domestic violence homicides rose in Chicago, Kansas City, and Ohio, and domestic violence's share of violent crimes climbed from 25% in 2020 to 27.5% in 2024. The National Domestic Violence Hotline answered one million calls in 2025, up from nearly 637,000 in 2020.
