NZ First wants to get rid of regional councils

NZ First deputy Shane Jones told about 130 people at a Lower Hutt church on 30 August 2026 that his party wants to scrap regional councils — the bodies that manage things like rivers, flood protection and public transport across regions. He said National's plan to reorganise them never had NZ First's support, and voters should decide at the election.
