Jakarta Protest Over Corruption Turns Violent One Year After Deadly March

Thousands marched on Indonesia's parliament in Jakarta on August 28, 2026. It marked one year since rallies where about 10 people died and 7,000 were arrested. Protesters want a law dating to 2008 that would let the government seize property bought with stolen money. After dark, fighting broke out: police fired tear gas and water cannons, a police post and motorcycle were set on fire, and several people were carried off on stretchers.
