Jakarta Anti-Corruption March Turns Violent One Year After Deadly Protests

Thousands marched on Indonesia's parliament in Jakarta on August 28, 2026 — the anniversary of 2025 rallies where about 10 died and 7,000 were arrested. Protesters demanded passage of an asset-seizure bill first introduced in 2008. After nightfall, clashes erupted: riot police fired tear gas and water cannons; a police post and motorcycle were set alight. Several people were carried off on stretchers.
