Local iwi can block military launches from new Canterbury spaceport

A new spaceport at Kaitorete Spit is jointly run by the government and local iwi, with equal say on its board. If a launch could have military use, both sides must agree. Wairewa rūnanga chair Dr Matiu Prebble said iwi will not allow weapons-related launches, effectively blocking foreign military access.
