Iwi hold veto-level say over foreign military launches from Kaitorete Spit spaceport
Tāwhaki, the Crown-iwi joint venture building a spaceport at Kaitorete Spit, has a 50/50 board split between Crown and rūnanga representatives. Any dual-use launch policy must go before both. Wairewa rūnanga chair Dr Matiu Prebble said "any kind of kinetic use of technology will not be supported by the rūnanga," giving iwi effective veto power over foreign military access.
