ACT wants Parliament to decide when Māori custom can shape court decisions

ACT wants to stop courts using tikanga — Māori customary values and practices — in their decisions unless Parliament has specifically allowed it. Leader David Seymour said the Supreme Court's Ellis ruling gave tikanga a bigger role in law than Parliament intended. The change would put Parliament, not judges, in charge of deciding when tikanga applies.
