Canada and U.S. talking about cutting the tax on Canadian steel sold south of the border

Canada and the U.S. are negotiating a tax deal on Canadian steel. Up to four million tonnes a year would carry a 25 per cent tax; anything above that, 50 per cent. Right now a 50-per-cent U.S. national-security tax applies to all of it. Trade Minister LeBlanc and negotiator Charette met their U.S. counterpart Greer in Washington on Aug. 21, 2026, before a deadline, three sources told the Globe and Mail.
