Proposed Canada-U.S. deal would halve steel tariff within four-million-tonne quota

Canada and the U.S. are negotiating a tariff-rate quota for steel: 25 per cent duty on up to four million tonnes of Canadian exports annually, 50 per cent above that ceiling, three sources told the Globe and Mail. Trade Minister LeBlanc and negotiator Charette met U.S. Trade Representative Greer in Washington on August 21, 2026, ahead of a deadline. The 50-per-cent Section 232 tariff currently applies.
