Fewer Ships Will Cross the Panama Canal Starting September

Starting September, the Panama Canal will allow fewer ships per day — down from 36 to 32. That removes about 11% of capacity on a route used by 14,000 ships yearly and earning Panama $3bn annually. The reason: El Niño and climate change are reducing rainfall, threatening the drinking water the canal relies on.
