Panama Canal to Cut Daily Ship Transits from 36 to 32 Starting September

The Panama Canal Authority will phase in a reduction of daily ship transits from 36 to 32 beginning 3 September, reaching full effect by 15 September. The cut removes roughly 11% of capacity on a waterway handling 14,000 ships yearly and generating $3bn annually for Panama. The ACP cited safeguarding drinking water as El Niño, intensified by climate change, threatens rainfall feeding the canal.
