Belgian university suspends American who accused late Cambridge professor of copying

Ghent University in Belgium suspended American researcher Nathan Cofnas on August 20, 2026, while it investigates discrimination. He had accused Jason Arday — Cambridge's youngest-ever Black professor — of plagiarism, meaning passing off others' work as your own. Arday resigned August 5 and was found dead August 14. The university's leader said academic freedom "is not unlimited." Cofnas expects to be fired.
