Government spending nearly $7 billion to keep Australian metals factories open

The government has committed $2.5 billion to the Tomago aluminium smelter — its third big factory rescue, after $2 billion for a Queensland smelter and $2.4 billion for Whyalla's steelworks. That's nearly $7 billion of taxpayer money keeping metals made in Australia. Every deal requires the factories to pollute less.
