Wildfire Grows Four Times Larger Near Big Sur, Prompting Evacuations and Road Closure

A wildfire called the Timber Fire started August 9 in a California forest and grew four times larger — from 400 to over 1,700 acres — by Monday evening. Firefighters had only 5 percent of it under control. People near Big Sur landmarks were told to leave. The main coastal highway is closed to visitors. The cause is still being investigated.
