U.S. AI Lab Arcee Declines to Amplify Security Fears About Chinese Open-Weight Models — Despite Competing With Them

Arcee, a U.S. open-source AI lab built to offer domestic alternatives to Chinese models, is declining to amplify security fears about those competitors. CTO Lucas Atkins told TechCrunch on July 22, 2026 that China's open-weight models are no more dangerous than any other open-source software, and that self-hosted inference gives the original maker no access whatsoever to a deployed model.
