WhatsApp iPad Accounts No Longer Require a Linked Phone

WhatsApp announced on July 22, 2026 that new users can now register directly from the iPad app without first linking to a phone. Registration still requires a phone number and SMS one-time passcode, but the iPad then operates as a standalone account rather than a companion device tethered to a primary phone, per a WhatsApp spokesperson.
