Retired judge calls government move-on orders 'careless and callous' before select committee

Retired judge Tony Fitzgerald, who presided over Auckland's Te Kooti o Timatanga Hou for homeless offenders for more than 15 years, told a parliamentary select committee the proposed move-on orders are "legally unnecessary, inconsistent with the Bill of Rights Act, careless, and callous." The bill would let police direct people as young as 14 who are begging or rough sleeping to move elsewhere. Justice Minister Paul Goldsmith defends it as covering a gap in existing law.
