Four leading cardiovascular organizations issue first universal heart attack definition

The ESC, ACC, AHA, and WHF jointly issued the first universally endorsed definition of a heart attack on August 28, 2026, in Munich. Prof Nicholas Mills of Edinburgh University led the taskforce. The consensus ends fragmented diagnostic standards under which a patient could be diagnosed in one country but not another. Prof Bryan Williams called it a "radical shift."
