Government to hold renovation payments in escrow under new trusted-trader scheme

The UK government will launch a trusted-trader database and staged payment system next month. Consumers' money will be held in escrow and released only after agreed project milestones are met. Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds said the government is "taking action to protect consumers." The CMA found customers lost more than £10bn in 2024 through rogue or unfair home-maintenance traders.
