Iran-Oman Hormuz Proposal Would Give Tehran Control Over Gulf-Bound Ships

Iran and Oman have outlined a joint proposal for a temporary shipping lane and demining operation in the Strait of Hormuz, with Oman's foreign minister saying an announcement is expected "soon." The accord would grant Tehran authority over ships entering the Gulf — a shift from the U.S. naval protection framework at a chokepoint handling roughly a fifth of global seaborne oil. Iran cautioned the deal alone won't reopen the waterway.
