Canada to impose $27.6-billion countertariffs on U.S. goods Sept. 8 after trade talks collapse

Ottawa will impose dollar-for-dollar countertariffs on $27.6-billion worth of U.S. goods effective Sept. 8, Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne announced. The move retaliates against President Donald Trump's 50-per-cent tariffs on roughly $28-billion in Canadian products, imposed after trade negotiations collapsed. Over 700 U.S. items are targeted, including steel, seafood, appliances and smartphones.
