Trump to double Canadian auto tariffs to 50 per cent, extend duties to auto parts in 2027

President Donald Trump said he will raise tariffs on Canadian autos from 25 to 50 per cent, covering cars, trucks and — for the first time under existing sectoral levies — auto parts, effective Jan. 1, 2027. The announcement followed the collapse of bilateral trade talks Friday after Prime Minister Mark Carney walked negotiators away. Canada's counter-tariffs on US$20 billion of U.S. goods start Sept. 8.
