U.S. 50% tariffs on $28B in Canadian goods now in force; Canadian retaliation set for Sept. 8

New U.S. tariffs of 50 per cent on $28 billion in Canadian exports — from hockey sticks and honey to dairy and essential oils — took effect Saturday. Prime Minister Mark Carney suspended trade talks Friday, calling the proposed deal "bad," and pledged dollar-for-dollar retaliatory tariffs starting Sept. 8. U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said Canada "declined to finalize the trade deal under the terms agreed."
