Twelve dead in Polish bus crash on Hungary's M3 motorway; driver detained

A Polish tourist bus carrying 59 people overturned on Hungary's M3 motorway near Budapest at approximately 01:00 local time on 16 August 2026, killing twelve and injuring 47. Police believe the driver fell asleep at the wheel and have taken him into custody. Thirty-five trapped passengers were rescued after cranes lifted the 24-tonne vehicle. One person remains in life-threatening condition.
