Body Found in Romania Believed to Be Missing British Hiker George Smyth After Nine-Month Search

A body found in Romania's Bucegi Mountains is believed to be George Smyth, an 18-year-old Bristol University geology student from Newport, Shropshire, Avon and Somerset Police confirmed on 15 August 2026. Smyth went missing on 23 November 2025 after placing an emergency call in severe weather, disoriented and showing hypothermia signs. His family has been informed; formal identification and repatriation efforts are pending.
