Body Found in Romania Believed to Be Missing British Hiker George Smyth

A body found in Romania's Bucegi Mountains is believed to be George Smyth, an 18-year-old Bristol University geology student from Newport, Shropshire. Police confirmed the discovery on 15 August 2026. Smyth went missing on 23 November 2025 after calling for help in severe weather, confused and showing signs of hypothermia — a dangerous drop in body temperature caused by cold. His family has been informed. Formal identification and bringing his body home are pending.
