Trump Administration Orders Shutdown of 900-Instrument Ocean Monitoring Network
The Trump administration has ordered dismantling of the Ocean Observatories Initiative, a 900-plus-instrument sensor network monitoring Pacific and Atlantic waters, following the president's firing of the NSF's independent board. NSF announced removal of in-water infrastructure from Oregon, Washington, Alaska, North Carolina coasts, and Greenland-Iceland waters. Recovery operations span 15 months. The shutdown cuts short a program designed to run 25 years after just ten years of operation.
