DOJ Pursues Major Breakup of Live Nation, Bypassing Previous Settlement
The Justice Department is suing Live Nation Entertainment under antitrust law, taking a more aggressive approach than a settlement agreement from 2010 allowed. By filing new charges directly, prosecutors can now pursue breaking up the company—such as forcing the sale of venues or separating Ticketmaster from the rest of Live Nation. Twenty-nine states have joined the federal case. The lawsuit targets how Live Nation controls multiple parts of the concert industry: it owns venues, manages artists, and operates the Ticketmaster ticketing system. Prosecutors argue this combination gives the company too much power and prevents fair competition in the concert market.
