Pentagon Confirms Enemies Used Commercial Location Data Against US Troops

The Pentagon has confirmed that hostile nations purchased commercial location data to track and target deployed US military personnel. The acknowledgment represents the first official admission that adversaries have weaponized the data-broker industry—firms that buy and sell location information from phones and apps—against active forces. A 2016 defense exercise had already shown the risk, tracking special operations forces from US bases to Syria using publicly available datasets.
