New York Times asks judge to block subpoenas of five journalists

The New York Times argued in federal court July 23, 2026, that Justice Department grand jury subpoenas targeting five of its reporters were meant to intimidate them and reveal confidential sources. The Times asked U.S. District Judge Arun Subramanian in Manhattan to quash them. The Justice Department said it is investigating a national security breach. The subpoenas arrived July 10, two days after the Times reported on security concerns over a Qatar-gifted Air Force One jet.
