Sole female director in Venice competition calls gender gap a "structural problem"

May el-Toukhy's "Woman Unknown," premiering 6 September 2026 in the 83rd Venice Film Festival's main competition, was the only entry solely helmed by a woman. El-Toukhy called the lack of female directors a structural problem and said she has never heard a female director called a "genius" (Variety). Danish theatrical release follows on 4 February 2027.
