New York Times asks court to cancel orders for five reporters to testify

The New York Times told a federal judge July 23, 2026, that the Justice Department ordered five of its reporters to testify not to solve a crime, but to scare them and reveal who their secret sources are. The Justice Department said it is investigating a national security breach. The orders arrived July 10, two days after the Times published a story on security concerns about a jet gifted by Qatar to serve as Air Force One.
