New York Times asks federal judge to quash subpoenas targeting five journalists

The New York Times argued in federal court on July 23, 2026, that Justice Department grand jury subpoenas against five of its journalists were issued in bad faith to intimidate reporters and expose confidential sources. The Times asked U.S. District Judge Arun Subramanian in Manhattan to quash the subpoenas. The Justice Department said it is investigating a national security breach, not interfering with reporting.
