Taranaki councils divided on local government reform approach

South Taranaki and Stratford councils want two unitary councils — combined regional and district bodies — for Taranaki. New Plymouth and Taranaki Regional Council will send a proposal without naming a preferred model. Both are due to government by 9 August 2025. Submissions alone change nothing; any reorganisation needs legislation or a Local Government Commission process.
