Taranaki councils split on local government reform direction

South Taranaki and Stratford district councils have voted to propose two unitary councils for Taranaki under the government's Head Start pathway. New Plymouth District Council and Taranaki Regional Council will submit a "Pathfinder Proposal" without naming a preferred model. Both proposals are due to the government by 9 August 2025. No structural change takes effect through submission alone; any reorganisation would require legislation or a Local Government Commission process.
