Law Commission backs tougher sentencing over new hate crime laws

The Law Commission's 22 July 2026 final report advises against standalone hate crime offences, citing inconsistent charging and conviction. It backs the existing approach of longer sentences for hate-motivated crimes and recommends improving that framework. Twelve recommendations target the Sentencing Act and Criminal Procedure Act.
