
Ex-Met chief apologizes for covert unit abuses he says he never knew about
Former Met Police commissioner Paul Condon told the Undercover Policing Inquiry on 21 July 2026 that he apologized to everyone harmed by the Special Demonstration Squad — a covert unit that infiltrated leftwing groups from 1968 to 2008. The highest-ranking officer to testify, he said he knew nothing of the abuses during his 1993–2000 tenure.
