EU Floats 15-Year Trial Membership for New Countries

Future EU members would face a 15-year probation period under a plan proposed by enlargement commissioner Marta Kos. Kos described the safeguard in interviews with the Guardian and other European papers on 6 October 2026. The idea would still need approval from current EU member states.
