FBI Spy-Hunting Teams at Half Staff in Many Offices, NPR Reports

Many FBI counterintelligence teams, the units that track foreign spies, are staffed at 50% to 60% across its 56 field offices, NPR reported Oct. 6, 2026, citing five sources. Agents shifted to violent crime and immigration cases, the report said. The FBI said the report is false, cited a robust operation and more than 1,500 task force personnel.
