Ruapehu mayor wants Chateau Tongariro restored, not demolished

Ruapehu Mayor Weston Kirton wants a political commitment to restore the closed Chateau Tongariro Hotel. He said demolition should be ruled out. Reports that demolition is still an option would upset thousands who backed saving the landmark, which has Category 1 heritage listing for its historic value, RNZ reported on 3 October.
